Guns Germs and Steel

1. Describe the difference between bands, tribes, chiefdoms, and states.

Bands: Small groups of people or nomads, that have a lack of government.
Tribes: A group of families that live together and form a bigger group of families. Like a really small town. They also lack government.
Chiefdoms: A large group of people. Similar to a city with thousands of people, and a lot of families. Unlike bands and tribes, chiefdoms have a government.
States: A place with more than one million people. Has a government, and usually a leader, like a Governor or another government official.

2. What is something interesting that I took from this chapter?

I think that it was really interesting how the chapter discussed the difference between Bands, Tribes, Chiefdoms and states. Out of the four of these i only knew what a state was and what a tribe was. But i also learned more about those. I did not know that a tribe does not have a government, I guess I am so used to having a government that I assumed that most people have one. Boy was I wrong. I think that the most interesting thing was that I know what a Chiefdom is. I had never heard that word before until I read this chapter. It is very similar to a state, except with less people and not necessarily one specific leader that has more power than others.
